The Costly Convenience: The Truth About Third-Party Food Delivery Apps

Marco Posadas • Apr 03, 2023

Third-party food delivery apps have become increasingly popular over the years, offering customers the convenience of ordering their favorite meals from the comfort of their own homes. However, what many people don't realize is just how expensive these services can be.

While customers may only pay a few dollars for delivery fees, the fees restaurants pay to be listed on these apps can be exorbitant. Many third-party delivery apps charge restaurants a commission fee ranging from 15% to 30% on every order, which can significantly eat into their profit margins.

For small and independent restaurants, this can be particularly challenging, as they may not have the same resources and negotiating power as larger chains. In addition, many third-party delivery apps also charge restaurants for advertising, promotions, and other fees, further increasing their expenses.

To offset these costs, some restaurants have begun offering their own delivery services, which can be a more cost-effective option. Alternatively, customers can choose to order directly from the restaurant's website or by phone, bypassing the fees charged by third-party delivery apps.

While third-party delivery apps can be convenient for customers, it's important to recognize the financial burden they place on restaurants. As customers, we can support our favorite local restaurants by considering alternative ways of ordering and supporting them directly.
